As noted on Saturday night, Bobby Roode and Eric Young
asked for their release from TNA. The release was granted and the word
is that they wanted to pursue other offers. It’s possible that they
could end up somewhere like ROH and/or New Japan Pro Wrestling but the
early word going around is that, while not confirmed by anyone yet, this
story is WWE-related.
Roode was close to signing a developmental deal with WWE prior to
joining TNA in 2002 and he wrestled in some dark matches between 2002
and 2004. There was talk at the time that he would be signed to a deal
but nothing materialized and the key people in the company told him that
they did not have anything for him and he was too good for
developmental so he should go elsewhere and come back at a later time.
Eric Young wrestled, at least, three matches for WWE during that
timeframe. I know that he wrestled on at least one episode of Velocity
in a tag team match with Roode. You can check out that clip below. He
also wrestled as “Showtime” Eric Young in singles matches with Sean
O’Haire and a Sunday Night Heat match against Val Venis.
In the past year or so, WWE has softened their position on hiring people from TNA. If Roode and Young are going to WWE, then AJ Styles ’hiring
may have helped because he has gotten over far more than people in
management expected. He is over in almost every city and he’s getting
bigger pops than everyone except Brock Lesnar. This should be a wake-up
call to management because it shows that the WWE audience knows TNA
wrestlers much more than WWE is willing to admit.
If they are indeed going to WWE then we’ll probably hear about it soon.
